A deadly Diphtheria epidemic plagues  the neighbor hoods & schools in Scotland  during the holiday season.  The Hospital in town is out of anti toxin. & will need to get some more but the Delivery & mail during the holiday season is  reckless & takes longer then usual. Blizzards & heavy snow storms are also post ponging its delivery to the children's Hospital.
over 50 kids & adults at Chilla & Josephs private Jewish school had taken ill.  during the epidemic & more are slowly staying out. including Chilla. During a snow storm a delivery truck carrying the Anti-toxin wrecks after skidding over black ice on the roads.
Joseph & his friend Iggy stumble upon the wreck & discover the medicine. Joseph & Iggy carry the crates of medicine back to his house. as the rich Jewish boy plans to keep it all to himself & offers it to Fern Chilla's best friend for ten million dollars.  
the only thing on  Joseph's mind is what he will get for Hanukkah. & less about the epidemic plaguing his friends & others. & refuses to share the medicine with Chilla after he is continuously harassed by Chilla's best friend Fern.  Joseph tells Fern & his cousin mo. that he was going to share it with iggy & himself.

Chilla's barking cough finally gets her parents attention after a few days  & they take her to the emergency room that evening. that same  night Chilla is admitted into the Hospital. she is diagnosed  With Diphtheria & put into Quartine with many other children whom had also fall ill from the Diphtheria epidemic.


Chilla eventually falls into a deep sleep from  her high fever & sickness . & is  in sleep for days even sleeping through Hanukkah  Chillas father brings there manorah from home & celebrates this years Hanukkah at the hospital. Chilla's father sits with his daughter at her bedside with no sleep himself  singing & talking to her. praying she would recover & be alright. trying every thing he could to wake up his only daughter.  As  he was  afraid that he might loose his his only child. & sulked through out the night stroking his daughters face & hand gently all the while.  Chilla responds with coughs & small gasps for air A sytafect from the deadly Diphtheria.  Daniel dares not to leave his daughter's side for a second even refusing to go to work.
